Days 93 and 94; July 29 & 30 -- Canada to USA

Image
Whee.....what a long three days.....we put a lot of miles on the vehicles and our bodies.  When I last blogged we were at Dave's RV Park in Vanderhoof, BC.  Gary said that this was one of the best kept campgrounds that we had visited.  The bathrooms were spotless and the grounds and flowers matched.  We aimed to go around 200 miles and stop.....somehow that didn't fall into place.  We stopped for lunch at a rest area.  I took this pictures overlooking the valley below from the camper door.  You can see the screen door marks on the picture.  All along this road, we passed original log houses and out buildings.  It made you feel like you were travelling on the very path that the pioneers had taken.  We finally found a campground in the canyon.  Gary got out to take his movie pictures and asked me where we were and what was the name of the campground.  Neither of us knew.  We did have a good dinner. ...

Day 92; July 28--Stewart to Vanderhoof

Image
The driver finally decided that yes we would travel on today.  It had been raining off and on for the past three days in Stewart.  So, here we are going down the road into the clouds........   Oh, boy, we hit civilization again.  I see the Golden Arches.  We stopped for hamburger and ice cream.  (Remember Canadians don't drink sweet tea!)  We drove from the mountains and started seeing hay fields, cows, and horses.  Back to the country for the farm kids. I wasn't paying attention, just enjoying the scenery when I saw a second-year black bear cub along side the road.  I wasn't expecting to see anymore for awhile.  The tour guide told us that a bear will kept her cubs until they reach three years old and then she kicks them out on their own and she is up for dating again.  Smart Bears!   When we got to the campground at Vanderhuff, I took this picture of a rainbow from the door of the camper.  This is our site at the Dave'...

Day 91; July 27 -- Day of Eating and Bear Watching

Image
We got up and had cereal.  Driver had seen an ad for a local cafe with Liver and Onions and requested that he wanted to eat there before we left.  He chose lunch time. Before we went to lunch, we went back to Hyde to check on the fish and bears.  It rained just about the whole day.  It was raining when we went past the post office in Hyde.    It was raining when we got to the observation station for bears.  My grumpy driver informed me that this would be like watching football in the rain.....he slept in the truck.  I put on my tourist hat and grabbed my umbrella (Susan should have been there too) and headed out to watch.  I found a dry spot under a pine tree and settled down with my Nook.  I finished reading the book "Tisha".  It was enjoyable.  It was about a teacher in Chicken, Alaska.  Patience paid off and a male black bear came walking along the shore.  Pretty soon, I decided my feet were freezing. ...

Days 89 and 90; July 25 and 26 -- Junction 37 to Stewart, BC

Image
This was one of the prettiest drives.  We have decided Canada has just as much lovely scenery and more wildlife to view.  Sunday night we stayed at the Junction of 37/Alaskan Highway.  We choose the Little Nugget RV Park.  Can't imagine why they parked us on this street? We did see one lone moose today wading up to it's knees in a lake.  We mainly are headed south as this time.  Our Sirius radio is working now. although I need to move the antenna.  Seems to be messing up the compass on the truck mirror.  We stayed half-way to Stewart at the Tatogga Lodge.  It was pretty rustic.  The electricity went off for about an hour, the internet was non-existent.  A group of bicyclists camped there also.  Helicopters were taking off every few minutes.  Mosquitoes were as large as birds and more plentiful.  I was suppose to do laundry but it started to rain and Gary had not unhooked the truck ...

Day 88; July 24 -- Whitehorse to Junction at Watson Lake

Image
We left this morning around 9:38am.  My body forgot that it was now on PT.  Maybe about the time I get used to it, we will change again.  The weather was cloudy and cool.  When we stopped for lunch it was 66 and I got cold sitting in my chair in front of the door.  We stopped at the Continental Divide Gas station.  While Gary pumped, the owner washed the windows, and I took a picture of this vintage car (Galaxy 500).  There are a lot of old cars sitting around in the north.  Holy Smolly, I did catch this brown bear.  The driver was so happy to be on good roads, that he was hitting 70 mph every now and then.  That makes taking pictures really difficult.  Today I saw a moose, a black bear, and this brown bear.  I just about trashed the picture but was hoping the bear was behind the light indicator.  We arrived at the Little Nugget Campground around 4:00pm.  How did they know which road we needed to be put on? ...

Day 87; July 23 - Cottonwood RV to Whitehorse

Image
We had another beautiful day to travel through Canada.  Roads were good, weather was great (sunny and high around 75).  We decided to try the Hi Country Campground.  We set up and I took a nap and then we headed to Wal-Mart to get supplies for the next few days.  I got my pictures developed.  As we we driving past the Honda dealer I started giggling.  Driver had to drive around the block so I could get a picture and he could see what had caught my eye.  There you go!  If this wouldn't make you stop to buy a new Honda I just don't know what would?  Ha! I did go back and add some pictures to yesterday; the WiFi here in Whitehorse works very good. Better get up; I promised the driver Bacon and Eggs for breakfast today.  We are headed to south of Watson Lake today on Highway 37.  We have over  300 miles to cover.

Day 85; July 22 -- Tok to Cottonwood RV Park

Image
What a long, long, bumpy ride.  We left at 9:48am this morning.  We drove over bump and dell.  Usually around 25-40 mph. Last night I tried to drown myself.  Somehow I got tangled up in the tube to my C-Pat, turned it over, it was blowing water into my mask, woke me up, I yanked it off huffing and puffing, then it was blowing water all over the bed, Driver woke up to inform me it was raining on him, finally turned it over and turned it off, had to take the bedding off, and start all over again......... We now are back in Canada.  The Yukon Territory. The Alaskan side was bad; but we hit mostly gravel and construction on the Canadian side.  Gary said the Canadians did this on purpose so that we had to stay and spend more money in their country. This was an usual sight, we had a flag dog.  It acted like a sheep dog herding his cars.  He even had on his green reflective vest. We got to the Cottonwood RV park around 6:00pm PT. ...

Day 85; July 21 -- Valdez to Tok

Image
We left this morning with mixed feelings.  Hated to leave the cool climate; but ready to see the family.  Thanks for all the comments.  It sure makes me feel like I'm doing this for a reason.  Today in Tok, it took me 1/2 hour to upload three pictures.  Wrangell-St. Elias National Park is as large as Vermont and New Hampshire put together.  It only had two entries and was mainly a hiking park.  We could view it from the south and west sides.  We have been in Alaska exactly 1 month.  We were at Tok at the Sourdough Campground on my birthday and now we are Tok on July 21.  That is why we went out to eat......I was claiming my birthday dinner.  It was good too.  Ribeye steak, baked potato loaded, bread/butter, and salad bar.......Happy Birthday to Me!  As the driver was driving along, minding his own business, he asked me if I could see Prissy up in the clouds.  Now can you imagine me saying, Hah? and wondering what ...
