Day 53; June 19 - RR to Skageway
Our tour coach picked us up at the campground entry at 8:45am. The bus wasn't overly crowded and the weather was iffy. It has started raining last night before we went to bed and was still drizzling this morning. Our first stop was at Carcross (originally it was called Caribou Crossing); but a priest had it renamed because his mail kept going to other Caribou Crossings. There were several.
Matthew Watson General Store is the oldest general store in the Yukon Territory.
This is a picture of the train car we were assigned.
American/Canadian Border along the railway.
Lunch at the Bonanza Bar and Grill. I was brave and had the Fish and Chips; Driver had a burger.
Main Street of Skagway, Board walks just like on "Northern Exposure".
This building was covered totally in small twigs. Must get bored in the long winter months!
Train engine with snow blower.
Gary and Sarah!
Cruise ships sitting in the harbor.
On the way back home we saw two bear. This is the last one. The first one was not photogenic. On the train down, there were two along the way; I missed everything but the leaves moving after they had passed on down the mountain.
We stopped at the Carcross Desert (sandy bottom of an ancient glacier). We made it home. I downloaded the 43 pictures I had taken, then we headed to Wal-Mart to develop 153 pictures from the last few days. Hopefully, I can remember what they were. I like to take them in more often so I can get them recorded while the old brain in still sharp.
Tomorrow we are leaving Whitehorse and heading north on the Alaskan Highway. People in the campground have told Gary that the road is really bad and that sometimes they slow to around 10 mph. We are dividing this trip into two sections. We may not stop in a place with electricity or WiFi tomorrow night so don't worry if you don't hear from us.
