Day 62; June 28 - Refrigerator Replacement

Image
Our day turned out totally different than we had planned.  Driver wanted to go sight seeing so off we headed into the mountains.  We drove up on top of a mountain, if you look closely above the tree line that is the city of Anchorage.  Little better view as we were driving down.  Driver was out watching and recording the seaplanes coming and going.  GrMa was sitting in the truck reading.  Love to read!  I'm reading Sense and Sensibility now.  Maybe that should be the names of the driver and boss?  Trying to improve my mind!  Ha!  This lake had seaplanes parked all around the perimeter.  It was interesting.  We met a local girl (maybe there should be a question on which local or loco) at the laundry mat.  She was explaining how the land Alaskans didn't want the capitol of Alaska moved to land.  This way all the politicians had to fly to work in Juneau and if a plane went down---just one less politician. Just...

Day 61; June 27 - One Way Streets

Image
We got up early (Driver/Boss even got up before I did).  We had to take the camper to the spring man to evaluate the problem.  After that lovely experience, the driver (brother-in-law thinks the driver needs a new name, driver wants to be boss but THAT ONE HAS BEEN TAKEN!) wanted some time alone?  Found him sitting at the empty table across from our spot.  While he was in the spring shop, the refrigerator man called and they had a unit; but our cabinets would have to be modified,  GrMa Bear was not in favor of that.  We have this nice little spot with a tree and table. This is my new side-by-side refrigeration system.  Blue matches the trailer and is really handy.  This morning when I made my coffee and was ready for the cream, I just had to step outside in my nightie and scare the neighbors. Now the one-way street story.  When we were looking for repair shops we were listening to our updated Garmin and GrMa.  GrMa told driver to tu...

Day 60; June 26 - Glennallen to Anchorage

Image
We lift at 8:59am and got to Anchorage around 1:00pm.  The scenery started getting really pretty.  I told the driver that I just might have to change my opinion of this trip. We stopped for gas and the main said they had homemade cinnamon rolls.  Boy! did they?  We got one and shared it.  Best one I have had for a long, long time.  More pretty mountains with a clear sky and white fluffy clouds overhead.  My first glacier.  It is the white glob in the middle.  Lakes at the bottom of the big ditch?  Oh, my, the Driver did get excited.  A McDonalds was spotted in the town of Palmer on the way to Anchorage.  We didn't stop.....forward on.  Just look at these mountains......and look below.  We have one happy man now! We are at the Golden Nugget RV Park in Anchorage.  We will be here until July 7-8 or longer.  We have parts coming and repairs to be made.  Also the girls are flying in about three bloc...

Day 59; June 25 - Hanging Around Glennallen

Image
Saw on the sign that I have not been spelling this correctly.  As you probably have seen, I don't (sometimes it is the computer's fault) spell a lot of things correctly.  Computer is like the driver, it thinks it knows what I want to say?  As we were going to the laundry mat, we passed this motor home with this custom paint job.  Driver didn't understand why I wanted a picture.  It was great!  The laundry mat was not.  It was dirty.  They wanted $3.50 to run a washing machine.  A local lady started telling me how this machine and that machine didn't work.  I started putting my money in and it was just like the slots, I was getting no where--I packed up our stuff and decided I could wait another day to do laundry.  We are headed down to Anchorage today.  Books tell us it is just like a normal mid-western town.  I can hardly wait!  Because we are trying to eat up what we had in the refrigerator, we had soupy ice cream...

Day 58; June 24 - Chicken to Glenallen

Image
We left Chicken about 8:59am after mailing a few postcards.  We traveled down Taylor Road back to Tok (we didn't remember the road being in that good of shape--anything is good after what we traveled on yesterday!).  We got to Tok, filled up with diesel and washed the grime off the truck. Irma and Bob:  next time you go into your modern-day post offices you can thank your lucky stars.   Heading down Taylor Road toward Tok.  You can see the mountains to the south.  We didn't see them on the way up.  Needed eyes in the back of our heads.  We only saw one squirrel and two black birds today.  I thought Alaska was suppose to be know for its wildlife?  These are the three large mountains (Mt Drum, Mt Sanford (16,000) and Mt Wrangell)  along the Tok Cut-off.  They were beautiful.  Still no wildlife!  A new sign.  I'm sure Alaska decided it needed to produce these by the million.  View of the mountains ...

Day 57; June 23 - Chicken to Dawson Creek

Image
This drive over was to be slow and tedious so we got up and left at 7:14am AT.  The Canadian Customs was to open at 8:00am.  We started out with a full tank of gas, four bear claws, a cup of coffee, and a Diet Pepsi.  Weather was not cooperating.  Foggy and we couldn't see over the mountain, around the mountain, or hardly in front of us at times.  We did see one moose today.  I was trying to operate the camera with my left hand again and accidentally shut it off just as I had it zoomed upon the moose.  Darn!  This was an old log cabin at the community of Boundary.  It might have gas, it might have rooms, it might not be open.  It was not.  I might not want to stop anyway!  Grass on the roof again.  Road conditions were bad.  Mud roads that were slick red clay.  Made it to the Customs on time though.  View going down the hill towards Dawson Creek.  We crossed the river on a fer...

Day 56; June 22 - Tok to Chicken

Image
We got up to rain again.  We ate breakfast at the Sourdough Cafe.  We had Reindeer Sausage, Sourdough Pancakes (hope they weren't the ones they were throwing last night), Sausage Gravy/Biscuit, Fruit, Coffee or Juice.  We then packed up and headed north to Chicken, Alaska.   Boss does the inside packing and driver does the outside.  Sourdough Campground in Tok, Alaska  This RV was pulling an airplane.  This was a new sight.  The wings were off and placed along the length of the plane on the trailer.  As we were going up the Taylor Highway toward Chicken we passed an emergency sign that said a tow truck was ahead.  This is what was left of a camper.  It was in pieces.  We had been hearing that a lot of campers hit the dust along this highway if the driver is careless and lets the camper get into the soft shoulder and then the camper gets pulled over into the ditch/mountain.  Good thing I have a good driver.   City...
