December 31 2013 -- Happy New Years!

Image
I noticed that the last post was a Merry Christmas post.  Wellllllllll..... Happy New Year! Yesterday, December 30, we headed to Florida.  One more sticker added to the camper map.  Yippee! I held the camera for five miles with the intention of not missing the change of state sign.  I had it aimed at the side of the road and was viewing every sign along the way......about the time I pushed the button for this picture, the Driver (think next year we will promote him to Travel Planner--you know it is one of those things that employers do to delay a raise in pay) hit a BUMP! The next picture is on the way to our new campground.  It is called Whispering Pines in Silver Springs, Florida.   Gary booked this campground using our Passport America.  We get full hookup sites for $14 per night.  He has done a really good job picking out the sites.  Don't you agree he needs a new title.  Travel Planner he will be!  Diesel is a l...

Merry Christmas from the Travelling Trio!

Image
Even though we are far from home, our love and thoughts are with our family and friends. Merry Christmas! This is where we will be having Christmas dinner.  The owners are making ham and turkey and the few campers left in the park are to bring the side dishes.  I'm taking the Carman traditional Scalloped Oysters for Gary and I made the Cotton Candy Fruit Salad.

December 20 2013 -- Jekyll Island

Image
I'm tired and grumpy tonight.  After I see the pictures of today's activities I understand why..... Our first stop was at Fort King George.....  I don't know why I'm fascinated with these old, old trees with their coat of Spanish Moss. Fort King George  On down the road we came across the Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation.  It is now a state park.  This used to be one of several plantations owned by the same lord that raised rice with the help of hundreds of slaves. Next we drove over the bridge to Jekyll Island.  It was very interesting. There were several large homes.  This was the Mistletoe Mansion.  Goodyear had one too. This was part of the resort.  We accidentally took a wrong turn and ended up under a large canopy for valet parking.  Whoops! We took a turn down the historical section.  The Tabby House was standing alone and empty.  I bet it has some stories to tell. After stopping at th...

December 19 2013 -- Up to Camping World We Go

Image
I can't believe the nerve of the driver, he woke me before 8am this morning (and we are on eastern time!).  We took our little walk to the shower house, tidied up, and headed to Savannah GA.  We stopped at McDonalds for breakfast of Caramel Latte, McMuffins, and he had to have a Burrito too. We got our new toilet after talking to their repair people and Excel's repair people who suggested we call Thetford.  Thetford offered to replace the part, but Deb's handyman had already broken the petal completely from the base when he turned it upside down to check the underside.  Everyone claimed we had the best of the crop and suggested we get the same for replacement.  So......we did! To mix business with pleasure, the driver decided he wanted to take Scenic Hwy 17 back to the campground.  We came across a National Sign of Interest.  So we visited the "Smallest Church in America". The last line in the sign tells that the church was built by a local la...

December 18 2013 - Hanging Around the Lake

Image
Yesterday we drove west to Jesup.  Stopped at WalMarts and Walgreens.  Of course, we had to have ice tea from McDonalds to make the trip home. This is our camp spot for two weeks.  It is small and quaint.  I like it.  It has grass pads, the laundry room looks like it has been redone recently.  I think I like the openness.  I was having sunshine withdrawal.  We sit out today for awhile and I hung the lights on the awning.  Gary broke out the new grill that we bought when we were in Colorado over a year ago.  We had grilled burgers.  Yummy. McIntosh Lake RV Park  This is a water feature next to the lake.  There is a picnic table and lawn furniture and a community fire pit. The is the club house with a new deck that extends over the lake.  Plenty of room to sit in the sun and read a book.  We have been invited to Christmas dinner.  Owners provide the turkey and ham and the guests bring the side dish...

December 16 2013 -- Hunting Island SC to Townsend GA

Image
Here we go again..... The sun started peaking through Sunday afternoon.  I actually got out and walked around the grounds and close to the beach. Hunting Island State Park SC  The Pacific Ocean was right behind our camper.  Prissy and Gary had been here before on their walks; but it was my first view.  The beach was still wet from the drizzly rain that we had been having for several days.  I was needing some sunshine.  After being under the shelter of the pines and palms and clouds, I was ready to feel a few sun rays.  What do you think?  The ocean must be slowly eating away the shore lines?  I love these old trees.  There is beauty somewhere in them. This is our camper and you can see how close we are to the ocean.   The rates for this island park $31.62 per day or half off if you stayed for a month.  A good discount. Sunday afternoon Gary wanted to go out again, mainly to see the lighthouse on the island...

December 15 2013 -- Island to Island II

Image
Computer was really slow last night.  It took over one hour to download the last four pictures.  AND you know I'm not a patient person.  Get "er done! Yesterday, Saturday December 14, 2013, we went sightseeing to Hilton Head Island.  It reminds me of Aspen in the south.  Strictly a rich man's resort.  It was very well groomed and no mobile homes on stilts.  Beautiful to see and visit. As we crossed the bridge into South Carolina, you could see the the loading docks. Bridge from Georgia to South Carolina (Savannah) Loading Docks at Savannah GA  Out goal was to check out the Skidaway State Park located on Skidaway Island.  It was raining, I was getting grumpy from too much travel.  I sit in the truck and took pictures of the Spanish Moss hanging from the trees. I don't know if it was because of the weather or the fact that we would have to pull the camper through downtown Savannah to get to the park, but I axed the ide...

December 14 2013 -- Island to Island

Image
Here are a few days worth of pictures. On the way to town to do laundry, eat, and do our weekly shopping we luckily made a wrong turn and passed several old mansions along the beach front.  The snarly old trees add to their charm.  I could have taken more; but pretty soon one house looks that the other.  NOT! These condos look like they were built between one swamp and the other.

December 12 2013 -- Virginia and South Carolina

Image
We have two pooped old codgers sitting in our chairs tonight.  Let me see if I can remember where these pictures were taken.  I saw this sign at Pollards Corner.  I was trying to teach Roberta, Roberta, Roberta how to put pictures on Facebook and Gary was taking a break.  But I thought this park sign was appropriate for the Christmas season. Gary chose this park (R. Shaefer Heard) for the next few days.  Great! heavy trees and no satellite signals for us.  The satellite sitting on the bank belonged to one of the camp hosts up the hill.  He said this was the only place he could pick up a signal and sometimes it did not work.  It got cold during the night.  (26 degrees)  Gary said he was tired of being cold so our travel plans changed.  We are headed south. R. Shaefer Heard State Park (GA)  Once again, he is hooking up and heading now the road.  We only stayed here one night.   It was a Corp of Engineer Park so...

December 8 2013 - Sightseeing Around West Point GA

Image
Friday afternoon we took off to check out two historical red boxes on the map.  Before we hit the roads, we drove to the other side of the lake.  That is our home across the way.  I've not know such peace in a long, long time.  Our simple life is good.  I can handle the things that need to be done and Gary is good about going to switch the laundry around after I get it started. I've been cooking more and feel alive. R. Shaefer Heard Federal Park  The first attraction was the Callaway Gardens.  We drove through the woods and came to the entry gates.  They were blocked off so we didn't get to go inside. The next stop was the Little White House.  It was built by Franklin D. Roosevelt.  He built it for around $6000.  He would come to the Warm Springs area to soak in the warm waters to try to help cure his polio.  I bought the movie "Warm Springs" about his life in this area.  I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. ...
