February 26 2014 -- Florida to Alabama (Fort Pickens)

Image
One of My Favorite Days Tuesday morning we packed up after only one night at the Terreya State Park in Florida  It was a nice park, but Wednesday was forecast to have rain all day long and we did not want to travel in the rain.  We did want to see the plantation house that was in the park, so we went for a early drive in the park.  Several deer ran across the road in front of us; but this one wanted to poise for a picture. Just a short distance and we were at the beautiful house.  The old south did have a beautiful way of life; but I think I will take air conditioning and electronics. Back on the road, we crossed over the Pensacola Bay. And now we are in Alabama again.  Somewhere along the way we crossed the Swanee River.  The sign was pretty, it had music notes under its name.  Just wanted to burst into song!  Way down upon the Swanee River..........  (Had trouble spelling Swanee, so when I googled it I learned tha...

February 24 2014 -- North to Tallahassee FL

Because of the forecast for bad weather, we postponed our time to leave until Monday, February 24.  The weather remained calm until yesterday.  I was watching TV and Gary had gone into town to hang out at Harbor Freight!  Men?  I noticed that it was getting dark and there were a few sprinkles on the windows.  Shortly, a police car went through the park with his lights blinking.  I guess this is the way of warning the campgrounds that high winds are expected.  I turned the TV to the local channel and was informed that high winds, hail, and severe storms were coming our way.  Gary called to ask if I knew of the storms and to inform me that if they got bad to go to the bathroom.  (the cement block one)  The storms passed over us but headed straight to Daytona Beach to interrupt the race.  Our campground was only 40+ miles west of the track. So, now we had three days with no plans.  We went out to breakfast and on the way ho...

February 21 2014 -- Is it Time to Head North

Someone mentioned today that I had not updated my blog for five days.  So, here is a few pictures from the past few days.  The camper/sleeper on top is what we will add on behind for guests.....haha, Mary Kay, can you fit in it? The next picture we took when we went to the west coast of Florida.  It must have been a good spot to fish?  We could have driven right into the water.  Good thing the driver had the foot on the right peddle.  I'm nagging him to change an old habit; but his reflects are not what they used to be!  I don't know if you have noticed, but he gases with the right foot and brakes with the left.  Sometimes, I think we are giving the truck mixed signals;  but what do I know.  He has been driving like that for sixty some years......claims he started when he was four. This picture was taken on the way home.  (Dunnellon)  We even went around the block to get a good picture.  I think my camera skil...

February 16 -- North Florida Again

On February 7, we headed northwest to Silver Springs/Ocala again.  We liked the park and felt comfortable there.  The weather in Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois is still poor.  We will stay here until we see some signs of warmer weather coming. The picture is of palm trees in a row and the car sitting there selling orchids.  (I never got one!)  This was on the northern out skirts of Homestead.  Homestead is where Uncle Ralph Wilkerson and his family came several winters to pick produce.  Aunt Dorothy has been explaining this to me and Jean Henning Bell remembers her mother talking about it too. Just to see some new scenery, we headed west across the Everglades.  It was a good road and was a Seminole reservaton.  Construction around the Tampa area. As we were turning east to go into Ocala, I spotted this sign stating that Ocala was the Horse Capital of the World.  Amazing! Gary found this flock of birds interesting. ...

Feb 4 2014 -- South to Key West FL

Started the day with "Dear, time to get up."  Ugh, it was 8am in the morning.  My lights don't come on until after 9am. We started the day off at McDonalds with McMuffins and coffee.  Gary had sweet tea. The 130 mile trip was slow but pretty.  The traffic was heavy and most of the road was two lanes.  It was a beautiful day.  High reached 83 degrees.  I'm sorry northern friends; but it is nice! As you can tell, boat after boat......the towns reminded me of Bagnell Dam. When we reached Key West, I was surprised to find the older part had huge old homes.  Some were converted into Bed and Breakfast homes. This picture doesn't look like much, but the old librarian in me was impressed that this was Ernest Hemingway's home.  There were several people hanging around. This was our goal, to find the monument of the furthest southern point in the USA.  There was a line and Prissy was being very annoying and the driver sugg...

February 1 2014 -- Homestead Florida

My sleep apnea machine is still not functioning correctly.  I stopped at Walgreens and asked if they knew where I could go to have it checked; and this man gave me an address north off Miami on 244th Road.  We finally got there and turned left and the road turned into a residential area.  It had beautiful homes.  This is just one of my favorite. Gary likes the warm (hot) weather here; but he does not care for the traffic.  Every night about sundown the police sirens start to wail.  About 11pm, the owner locks the gates to our park.  We have a key in case we need to come and go; but we try to be tucked into our home at dusk.  WalMart has its tools under lock like electronics.  Gary went to Home Depot to find a wrench and said they should have their locked too because packages of metric wrenches had been torn open and some of the wrenches were missing.  People! Construction was going on in this Miami suburb.  I told ...
