August 15, 2012 - Road to Buena Vista
We slowly got up and prepared for our weekly sightseeing trip. The driver had chosen this route and as the day goes......
Looks like another beautiful day in the mountains. The clouds are even prettier here. We drove through Buena Vista and turned around and headed up Highway 306 towards Cottonwood Pass.
We made it to the pass just fine.
Don't know if the county maintenance changed or what? But the road turned into dirt when we headed down the other side.
The roads were actually smooth. They maintained these by watering them and then running a double grader system. We followed right behind. The Delia Road in Kansas needs this system. I still remember going over those wash-board ruts going to the boys' ballgames.
Our goal remains in the horizon. We made it to Taylor Reservoir.
The roads continued to deteriorate on the way to Tin Cup, Colorado. An interesting original old town. Lots of original housing, gift shop, and a BBQ wagon.
At Tin Cup, there is a sign stating that the roads were now for four wheel vehicles only. Well Big Daddy thought he had one.......
Not too bad, just a lot of bouncing and giggling. We had to pull over for several ATV's and saw a lot of dry camping. We made it to Mirror Lake and thought we were doing just fine. I commented to Gary on the drive about the number of accidents these ATVs might have. On our return trip through Tin Cup there was an ambulance surrounded by several (20+) ATVs and worried looking drivers.
Whoops! What is this? The picture does not do the road justice. These rocks were large, sharp, and pointy.
The driver thought he better get out on foot and see if he could jump over these boulders.
About that time two four wheelers came across and advised that the truck would take a beating on the next several miles. Good decision, somehow the driver backed the truck around on the dam and we headed back to Taylor. (I guess now an ATV will be added to his "I Want" list.) At Taylor we took a highway that lead us back to Gunnison. There was a lot of road work and down time. The road was being totally removed and redone. But to be positive, it was a beautiful drive. We crossed the Continental Divide three times today.
We ended our day by having dinner at the Bottleneck Cafe. We were able to be seated at the open windows overlooking the river. The atmosphere was great. The food was Tums worthy.
Back home for some baseball. I've finally had time to watch some games. The "Previous" button on the remote is great. I keep both teams updated.
Happy Travelling!
