Day 84; July 20 -- Last Day of Hanging Around Alaska

Image
We piddled around downtown Valdez this morning.  Mailed some postcards, got doughnuts at the local Safeway/Carrs.  Drove around the harbor.  We then headed back to the camper and stopped by a glacier on the airport road.  Driver had his bologna and cheese.  We then got in the truck and headed north.  The falls below is called the Horsetail Falls.  This one is the Bridal Veil Falls.  This is the old man that said "I do!"  We stopped at a road side parking area.  I was sitting in the truck reading and Gary was picking up rocks.  I looked up and saw this Eagle on the rock.  So, I got out and took his picture.  Don't have a clue who this old middle-aged couple could be?  Where did the time go?  Where did our youth go?  We still know how to have a good time though.  I saw a young couple taking their own picture, so thought we would try it.  Not to bad?  A look of puzzlement...

Day 83; July 19 - Day at the Beach

I got up yesterday morning and played on the computer for a little bit and then went back to bed.  I got back up around 8am.  I was tired.  This is the Bear Creek Campground on the outskirts of Valdez.  Lady was nice and let us have a site that our door opened out to the grass and woods.  Don't ask me what the driver was drinking when he parked? We drove downtown and walked along the harbor.  This was for the small boats.  Cloudy and rainy this morning.  Chaney and Calvin called this morning.  Chaney couldn't believe it when I said I had to wash dishes.  "In Alaska?"--Yes, we have the camper.  "You took the camper to Alaska?"  I don't think they can figure this out.  Also, she reminded me that when we get home she has plans for Avri to come to my house so we can have a tea party on the deck.  She also thinks Avri needs to go to the state fair too.  Can I handle that?  Probably?  Can you tell that art...

Day 82; July 18 - Grand View to Valdez

Image
We left the Grand View Campground around 9:37am.  The temperature was 48.  It was cloudy.  Clouds were so low that you couldn't even tell we were in the mountains.  We followed a lot of the Pipeline from Glennallen to Valdez.  It was good to see something that I had only heard about until now.  As we got closer to Valdez, we ran across this rest area with a memorial to Billy Mitchell.  He was a soldier that was sent to Alaska to establish the telegraph....I think.  This must have been his cabin, it was located in the park.  Glacier is about to run right into the highway.  I think was are going to drive up to see it closer.  Welcome to Valdez!  The city has a campground right by the welcoming sign.  We chose to stay in one a few miles back in the country.  I'm so excited!  We have real cable TV with over 72 channels.  Up until now, we were only allowed around 9 channels and they were so fuzzy you couldn...

Day 81; July 17 - Sunday Day of Rest

Image
I just wanted to hang out and enjoy the scenery today.  I was awaken this morning by a Skype call from Jessie and Mary.  Started my day off right.  I had a muffin and cream cheese for breakfast.  Last night Gary came in with two bags of groceries the neighbors had given him.  They were flying back to their home country this morning and didn't have any use for them.  They gave him four old bananas, oil, eggs, juice, salad dressing..... I made a great loaf of banana nut bread.  It was pretty good if I do say so myself.  Driver, Prissy, and I took a short walk while it was cooking. He told me he kept repeating his sad story of all the repairs that he made on his vehicles and put on his oldest clothes so people would feel sorry for him--that man!  He also is really pleased with all the goodies the girls left in the cupboards.  He has enough junk food to get him back in the lower 48.  Ha!  He really enjoyed being spoile...

Day 80; July 16 - Anchorage to Grand View CG

Image
It is really quiet without my friends to visit with.  Prissy and Driver don't have half the energy that they did.  We got up and piddled around and then we headed north towards Glennallen.  I remembered this little campground nestled between the mountains that I had seen on the way down.  After the driver told me he wasn't done in Alaska, I suggested that we stay there a couple of nights.  He agreed. Prissy doesn't know what to do now that she doesn't have to share her sofa.  Goodbye to the Golden Nugget Campground.  It had the best laundry facilities in Alaska.  Also, complimentary coffee if you are smarter than a coffee pot!  We did have a little earthquake along the edge of Alaska.  We didn't feel it.  But when we stopped at McDonald's in Palmer to get our last Tea and Ice Cream fix, we went past the Tsunami Warning Center.  It was announced on the news that there was not chance of one after the quake.  MK...

Day 79; July 15 -- Goodbye Friends

Image
We got up around 7:30-8:00am.  Got dressed and headed to Dennys for breakfast.  We all had a different version of create your own Grand Slam.   No, a bomb didn't go off in the camper, the girls were getting organized.  We sure did have a good time!  Here we are loaded and ready to head for the airport.  Driver is behind the camera!  Girls informed me they didn't need our help anymore.  They were ready to check-in and take a sleeping pill for the smooth ride to Washington/Los Angles. Big Bad Wolf and the Bear!  After the girls were delivered to the airport, we went back to a quiet camper.  I did the beds and laundry.  At the laundry room I tried to make coffee.  The pot had been burnt.  PeeUUUU.  I tried to wash it out, put the water in the pot, it proceeded to run out the other end all over the cabinet.  It was a Bunn and had a reserve and I was filling it with the pot that was to catch th...
