Travelling Trio

We didn't leave until around 9:34am this morning.  It sprinkled on us a little; but the drive went without a hitch.    After buying every bungee tie from Kansas to Alaska, we have everything nice and secure.  We got to Tok around 3;30pm Alaska time.  We are now 3 hours behind our mid-western friends and family. We made it through Customs just fine.  I was ready to be back in the United States.  Canada was pretty.  It was interesting; but it was NOT home. Just after we crossed the Alaskan line I did a double take.  There was a man on his roof weedeating!  Don't worry about hail damage here. While I was in the post office Driver took this picture of two lawn mowers on top of this cabin.  Not too clear but you can see the one of the left clearly. We left Whitehorse, Yukon Territory in Canada around 8:35am.  We headed northwest towards the Alaskan border. Somehow we ended up "DownUnder" for one of the most interesting experiences we have had in Canada.  The roads did start to fall apart.  I understand in my small mind that what we are facing is called the frost heave.  It looks like Mr. Jack Frost has heaved along the road and we ended up with lumps, humps and bumps.  This section of the road has been totally turned back into rock. Driver tries to tell me that this is ancient lava ash.  Time for gas?  The White River Campground was people friendly.  The host "Crocodile Dundee" was something from somewhere?  He had an accent that was interesting.  He and his wife made the stay fun and you would want to recommend it and stop back in the next trip.  They have a campfire burning and logs to sit on to chew the fat and listen to some tall tales.  There was a man and h...

Our tour coach picked us up at the campground entry at 8:45am.  The bus wasn't overly crowded and the weather was iffy.  It has started raining last night before we went to bed and was still drizzling this morning.  Our first stop was at Carcross (originally it was called Caribou Crossing); but a priest had it renamed because his mail kept going to other Caribou Crossings.  There were several.  Matthew Watson General Store is the oldest general store in the Yukon Territory.  This is a picture of the train car we were assigned. I got up and did two loads of laundry.  I was beginning to look like I had been on the road several days, so we loaded up and headed into town to find a beauty salon.  On our search we took a picture of one of the old original hotels.   T  I spent several hours and a few dollars at the saloon.  I had a new experience.  I asked to have a wax on my extra facial hair and was escorted into a back room where an Indian lady (lady from India) in her native dress proceeded to tread the hair off my face.  At first I thought I would like it; but pretty soon my toes started to curl in anticipation of the pain.  My hair turned out good.  I little lighter; but a really good hair cut.  After my beauty treatment, we went back to the camper and I gave Miss Prissy a bath.  Now all of the driver's women look good.  After dinner, we took a little ride into the country.  On the way south, a bear (brown) jumped out of the roads and ran acros...

We were on the road by 8:36am PT.  Driver must have been in a hurry for this 283 mile stretch.  The drive was was nice and calm.  We only saw one black bear and a few birds.  Wild life was scarce.  The road overall was ok.  I have made the comment that if people think this road is bad, they should drive Interstate 70 from KC to Columbia.  Ugh!  This is Camper Lot 71 in the Pioneer RV Campground in Whitehorse, YT.  Line them up, and take their money.  This is the good ship "Klonedike".  Wal-Mart.  There were between 25-35 campers lined up around the outside edges.  Gary would like to do this, but GrMa needs electricity and TV and internet and the finer things in life.   For some reason, my pictures loaded in backwards order.  This is heading down the hill towards Whitehorse.  This section of roads was along a lot of lakes.  Driver tells me that this is the longest bridge along the Alaskan Highway...
